Learning Through Play

Photography by Eloise Ross

At Holgate Preschool, children have access to a wide range of toys, games and resources and are encouraged to learn through play. Our practitioners plan interesting activities and set up well thought out learning opportunities so that the children can build on their interests and develop new skills.

Provision is based around the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum and is split into seven areas of learning: Personal Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Children's develoment is regularly assessed and documented on the Tapestry website - an online learning journal which staff can update instantly and parents and carers can access securely.

At preschool, the children have access to a PC and the internet. When using these, the children are supervised and, as you would expect, we have filters in place to prevent them from accessing anything unsuitable. Please ask to see our E-Safety policy for more information.

Our Intent PSED  at Holgate PreSchool is that children develop the pre requisite skills and knowledge that they need to settle in, make positive relationships and develop independence and trust. Children follow positive examples and role models and learn to be polite, respectful members of the community. Children learn that it is ok to feel different ways and they learn how to manage their emotions with the support of the team that they know and trust. Children learn that it is ok to be different and respect differences and similarities.

Our intent Physical at Holgate PreSchool is to

develop a child’s strength, coordination and positional awareness through play movement with both objects and adults. By providing opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors, adults can support children to develop their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, coordination and agility. Gross motor skills provide the foundation for developing healthy

bodies and social and emotional well-being. Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye co-

ordination, which is later linked to early literacy.

Our intent in Literacy at Holgate PreSchool is to develop a lifelong love of reading. Children will be exposed to a wide range of fiction and nonfiction literature as well as rhymes and poems. Literacy is used to get children inspired and hooked into their learning through exciting books. We see the importance at this young and crucial age of engaging parents in children’s literacy journeys with us and we offer lending libraries to enhance reading at home. Children are inspired to mark make through exciting activities planned sequentially for progression as the children move through their time with us.

Mathis ntent at Holgate PreSchool to give children experience in real life situations, and develop the foundation skills and knowledge that children need to tackle problems independently. Children gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and develop the ability to apply this in a range of situations.

Understanding the World intent is that Children are guided to make sense of their physical world around them and communities far and wide. They gain an understanding of diversity and culture and learn to be respectful. They learn about people who help us as well as jobs and vocations in the local community. Children gain a sense of who they are and how they fit into the local Acomb/Holgate community. Children gain an understanding of lifecycles and get hands-on experience with animals. Children explore the natural world and understand changes in seasons through regular trips out and Forest School sessions.

Our Intent in Expressive Arts and Design is to give children the chance to explore a wide range of media and materials. We give children the opportunity to become confident explorers and to express themselves independently and uniquely through the Arts.
